Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, better known as Minotauro, is a former heavyweight champion who competed in the Pride and UFC promotions. He is the twin brother of UFC fighter Antônio Rogério Nogueira.

Minotauro’s Pride ascension

Nogueira rose to prominence in the Pride Fighting Championships. It was there that he became the first Pride Heavyweight Champion. Nogueira won the Pride heavyweight championship with a decision win over Heath Herring at Pride 17 on November 3, 2001. Minotauro held the title from November 2001 to March 2003, when he lost by decision to Fedor Emelianenko at Pride 25.

Nogueira fought in twenty-one fights during his five-year stint in the Pride organization. Some of the most notable fights from this era include bouts against Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, Dan Henderson and Mark Coleman.

Minotauro’s UFC Debut

In 2007, Nogueira made his UFC  debut at UFC 73 against, ironically, former Pride opponent Heath Herring, winning the fight by decision.  Following his debut win, Nogueira would next face Tim Sylvia at UFC 81 for the UFC interim heavyweight championship.

Nogueira would go on to win the fight by submission late in the third round with a guillotine choke, securing the title and his place in history as one of only three men to hold championships in both the UFC and Pride.

Minotauro’s decline

After his title win, Nogueira fought 9 more fights in the UFC, putting up only 3 wins against Randy Couture, Brendan Shaub and Dave Herman.

Minotauro had his final bout at UFC 190 against Stefan Struve, which he lost by decision, marking his third straight loss. He left the UFC with a record of 5-6 and retired from the sport with an MMA record of 34 wins, 10 losses, 1 draw and 1 no-contest.

Antonio “Minotauro” Rodrigo Nogueira was officially inducted into the pioneer wing of the UFC Hall of Fame on July 10, 2016.
