Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje bounced back from a two-fight skid and ended Fight Night 135 with a highlight reel knockout of James Vick early in the first round of their main event fight last night in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Gaethje (19-2 MMA) and Vick (13-2 MMA) have been trash talking each other for months leading up to this fight, but it was Gaethje who managed to back up all his talk and put James Vick in his place last night.
Gaethje started off the fight by pressing the action as he usually does but Vick was able to successfully use his reach to his advantage, landing several kicks and left jabs, one of which stunned Gaethje momentarily. However, Gaethje continued to press forward and close the distance on Vick and ended the fight in spectacular fashion with a brutal overhand right that put Vick face down and ass up.
Gaethje, who has been one of the most active fighters on the UFC roster, fighting four times in the last 13 months, made it clear in a post-fight interview with MMA Junkie that he would like a short break from fighting.
“I’ve fought four times in 13 months – give me a break,” Gaethje said. “I’ve never been to Hawaii, I’ve never been to Jamaica, I’ve never bought a house. Let me do some things before you put me back in camp.”
Gaethje’s win ends his two-fight losing streak, which happens to be the only two loses of his career. His last two fights saw him losing to Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez.
Gaethje’s KO win also earned him a $50,00 bonus for Performance of the Night.
