Inducted into HOF(Pioneer Wing): May 28, 2010

Matt Hughes is a two-time UFC Welterweight Champion. In the UFC, Hughes put together two separate six-fight winning streaks, defeated all the available opposition in the welterweight division, and defended the belt a then-record seven times.

Hughes secured his first title win against Carlos Newton at UFC 34, ending the bout  early in round 2 with a vicious powerbomb that knocked Newton out instantly. Hughes went on to successfully defend the welterweight title five times before losing to B.J. Penn at UFC 63.

Hughes didn’t stay a contender for too long, as he fought Georges St. Pierre for the vacant welterweight title at UFC 50, just a few short months after losing the belt to Penn, who incidentally was stripped of the title when he went to compete in K-1. Hughes held onto the title for two years and had two successful title defenses, including a rematch with Penn, before losing it to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 65.

Hughes is a submission specialist, holding wins over several jiu jitsu black belts, as well as many f the greatest MMA fighters to grace the octagon. He holds notable wins over B.J. Penn, Georges St. Pierre, Matt Serra and Royce Gracie.Hughes has been regarded by many analysts and several media outlets as one of the greatest welterweight fighters of all time.
