Pitbull issues stern response to Caldwell’s callout

The rivalry that’s been brewing between Bellator MMA bantamweight champion Darrion Caldwell and featherweight champion Patricio “Pitbull” Friere is coming to a boil.

Caldwell apparently isn’t happy with just one belt and has made it clear that he wants to be two-division champ by jumping up in weight class to challenge Friere.

“I want to be the champ at 145 (pounds).I think it’s time for me to get two belts. I don’t see why Pitbull is the champion. He’s not a champion. And after Aug. 17, I’m looking to fight Pitbull.”

Caldwell, who last fought at Bellator 195 against Laendro Higo, winning the fight with a guillotine choke midway through the first round, feels that there is a lack of competition for him in the bantamweight division.

“There’s no competition at 135 for me – not right now,” Caldwell said. “Whether they don’t want to sign a contract, or are just not ready, there’s just nobody in line for me. And I’m only progressing.

Caldwell also feels the next title fight with Pitbull is rightfully his, and while Bellator isn’t pushing for a superfight between the two divisional champs, he has no problem with putting it out there and stating his case.

“Who else is in line for that title fight? No one besides me. I’m the champion at 135, and I’m going to be the champion at 145. I don’t think Pitbull wants to fight anybody else but me, and after this fight, there’s nobody I want to fight but Pitbull.”

While that would certainly be an entertaining fight to see, Caldwell has to get by Load Nahat at their main event showdown at Bellator 204 on Aug.17.

On the other end of the spectrum, Pitbull, whose last fight saw him winning a decision over Daniel Weichel in their main event rematch at Bellator 203, seems more than welcome to the challenge as he has issued a response to Caldwell’s recent callout.

Pitbull went even further and stated he intends to finish Caldwell in the same manner that Caldwell finished his last opponent.

Pitbull and Caldwell’s Twitter beef has actually been going on for months and doesn’t look to stop until these two face-off inside the cage. Even though there hasn’t been a peep from Bellator about a title vs title bout, they have to be planning something for the future. This fight surely can’t be ignored, it has to be made.
