With only one month until Fight Night 137 comes to Brazil, the UFC officially announced that Thiago Santos would be stepping in to replace injured MMA vet Glover Teixeira.
Teixeira(27-7 MMA) was originally set to face Jimi Manuwa(17-4 MMA) in the main event of UFC Fight Night 137, but had to pull out of the fight due to a torn rotator cuff in his left arm. The injury has been bothering him since a UFC Fight Night 77 meeting with Patrick Cummins, which took place in Nov. 2015.
“I felt the shoulder – it would stop hurting, I’d recover, and then in camp I’d feel it every now and then,” Teixeira said. “And then I think it just got worse.”
Teixeira, who is Brazilian expressed his disappointment over having to pull out of the fight, which is being held in his home country, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie.
“I was very upset,” Teixeira said. “Very upset that I couldn’t fight in Brazil. It’d been a while since I had fought in Brazil. I’ve been fighting in Europe a lot, in Canada. But I hadn’t fought in Brazil in a while. I was very upset that I couldn’t fight, especially a main event. It’s a very big missed opportunity. But it happens.”
Santos, who is also Brazilian, has an MMA record of 18-6 and has had recent wins against legend slayer Anthony “Lionheart” Smith, Gerald Meerschaert and Kevin Holland. He has won bonuses for Performance of the Night(2) and Fight of the Night(1) and is currently the 12th ranked middleweight in the UFC.
