Khabib Nurmagomedov shut down Conor McGregor’s hopes of reclaiming the lightweight title at UFC 229 by forcing the Irishman to tap in Round 4 of their main event fight on Saturday night.
Khabib came out strong from the jump and rocked McGregor early in the first round. From there, he used his usual relentless ground game, taking him down round after round, wearing him down until he found an opening and sunk in a rear naked choke, forcing McGregor to tap.
While this win is certainly a sweet victory for the undefeated Dagestani, it all seems to be overshadowed by the events that unfolded after the fight. Nurmagomedov, after forcing the stoppage, screamed something at McGregor, then walked to the center of the octagon and threw his mouthpiece at someone cageside, then climbed over the cage and lept into the crowd. This is when ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. As it turns out, McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis was the one cageside that Nurmagomedov went after. He was saying something to Khabib and then “The Eagle” soared and a brawl ensued.
While all the chaos was going on outside the octagon, McGregor jumps up on the cage and tries to go over but is pulled back down and then one of Nurmagomedov’s camp jumped up on top of the cage and McGregor swung at him a few times before being pulled back into the cage. But there were two more of Khabib’s entourage inside the cage and they managed to get off a few punches before security could get to them.
After the smoke cleared, Dana White refused to put Nurmagomedov’s belt on him, claiming that if he did, then the fans would start throwing shit into the cage. So, he was ushered out and no one was inside the octagon when the winner was announced. Also, three of Khabib’s team members were arrested for the post-fight brawl inside the octagon, but McGregor refused to press charges.
Now it seems that the MMA community is condemning Khabib for his actions, but was it as bad as what McGregor did this past April when he hopped a plane with about 20 goons and stormed the Barclay Center in New York and chucked a dolly threw a bus window, injuring a fighter and causing three bouts to be cancelled? Not to mention, look at how many years it took for the UFC to be able to get fights in New York. Khabib hurt no one. However, the members of his team should definitely be punished.
Seems that McGregor gets to do whatever he wants just because he makes the UFC money. He jumped the cage and got into Jose Aldo’s face while Aldo was there with his family prior to their championship fight. He has also jumped into the cage and shoved an official and then smacked another one, although neither one was officiating a UFC bout.
If the UFC isn’t going to punish McGregor, then they shouldn’t punish Khabib and strip that man of his title that he has rightfully earned. He is the best fighter on the planet. Seems Stipe Miocic was 100% right, the UFC is a total sh*t show.
